Kitten Antics

Blair Hoffman had no idea how things would go when she brought Pinnochio Rose and Pippin McGee in for a portrait sitting. Both kittens, American Shorthair Classic Silver Tabbies, have natural sweet smiles, but they're also gifted with the full repertoire of kitten antics.

Personalities quickly began to emerge. Pinnochio Rose (known as Nocchi) is very shy, Blair explains. "She walks between my legs and always keeps me in her sight. She is lightning fast and loves the laser toy, jumping up to two feet in the air. She runs down the hall on her toes, and I swear she dreams of a Prada bag to complete her look. She is a diva from her head to her toes.

"When Pippin runs down the hall he looks like he just got off a horse - the polar opposite of Pinnochio, so cute! Pippin could be a therapy cat. He has an amazing disposition. He even tolerates a small child who repeatedly picks him up and carries him upside down. He also has the build and temperament to be a show cat, but instead he watches the cat shows on cable from the comfort of the sofa and looks for things to knock over.

"Pippin was thrilled to walk in the door of Sutton Studios. He was purring the minute I took him out of his carrier and was game-on the minute David brought out the toys. David got the 'money shot' when Pippin leaped from the ground. Pippin really didn't want the play date to end."

Nocchi, on the other hand, had to be Nocchi. "Despite David's efforts, she continued to run behind the canvas and he spent a lot of time retrieving her. Once they came to terms though, she was magnificent. Of course, she wanted nothing to do with the toys."

"Pippin was hilarious and brought his a-game to the studio. He was Mr. Congeniality. Nocchi was curious, fast and delightfully sweet . . . just a precious little girl. By all accounts David had a great time too!"

REFLECTION & REFRACTION

David Sutton Spring Break

One of my cousins recently phoned me out of the blue to suggest that I read a great big book called The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, by David Wroblewski.

If my column's a bit scant this month that's because I've been reading this magnificent novel populated by a lot of dogs and some serious dog people.

Buggin' out!

It might also be due to my preoccupation with getting away for a few days at the end of March to finally shake off the last remnants of Winter's grip by going someplace warm.

Happy April, everybody, and I promise to bring you another rescue tale in our May newsletter.

Cheers!
